Board certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Casso MD is one of Houston’s most established and leading neck lift specialists. His thorough, yet measured approach to facial surgery, cultivated over 35 years of experience, creates results that are natural and beautiful.

What is Neck Lift Surgery?

This neck rejuvenation procedure is helpful in treating jowls, laxity of skin in the neck area, prominent muscle bands (platysma bands), and fatty deposits under the chin. A neck lift can restore a smoother, firmer, and more defined jawline, making you look younger and more refreshed.

The surgical procedure is especially beneficial for those experiencing signs of aging, including jowls, sagging skin, excess fat, and muscle laxity. By tightening the underlying muscles and removing excess skin, a neck lift improves both the appearance and contour of the lower face and neck.

How the Lower Face Ages and How a Neck Lift Can Help You Look More Youthful

Aging affects the lower face and neck through a combination of factors, including:

  • Loss of Skin Elasticity – The production of collagen and elastin decreases over time, causing loose skin, wrinkles and sagging, resulting in the appearance of the “turkey neck.”
  • Fat displacement – Natural fat pads around the neck and jawline shift and shrink, diminishing support to the facial structures of the lower face.
  • Weakening of the neck muscles – This contributes to the appearance of vertical bands in the neck, less jawline definition and skin sagging.

Keep in mind that this process is further accelerated by environmental factors such as sun exposure, smoking, and gravity.

A neck lift effectively reverses these signs of aging by addressing multiple layers of tissue. The procedure tightens the skin and lax muscles, repositions fat deposits, and reinforces the muscles beneath the surface. This creates a smoother, more defined jawline and helps to eliminate sagging skin, restoring a youthful, natural-looking contour to the lower face and neck.

How is a Neck Lift Performed?

Patients with skin laxity in the neck or prominent muscle bands in the front of the neck (platysma bands) undergo neck lift surgery with incisions that  are carefully placed along edges of cartilage in front of the ears, extending behind the ears and along the hairline, respecting the patient’s hairstyle.

If necessary, neck muscles are undermined, or freed up in this deep plane procedure and are advanced and secured; fat may be removed through a short incision placed under the chin. Excess skin is removed and small drains are inserted. The wounds are carefully sutured, ensuring a smooth, natural-looking result.

  • Enhances overall facial balance and harmony

Is a Neck Lift or

Neck Liposuction Right for You?

For those experiencing significant skin laxity and muscle banding a full neck lift may be the most effective option. Your initial consultation will determine the best approach based on your unique facial structure and aesthetic goals. Patients with good skin tone who have excessive fatty deposits under the chin may benefit from a simpler procedure (submental liposuction), which involves a small incision under the chin to remove excess fat. This procedure is often performed by Dr. Casso, a skilled neck lift surgeon, in his office with oral sedation and local anesthesia.

My experience with Dr. Casso has been an A+. His staff was professional and friendly during all of my appointments. During my initial appointment with Dr. Casso, he explained what he planned to do if I decided to get the surgery and answered my myriad questions. I appreciated the fact that he was not urging me to get the surgery, but instead, left the decision to me. Before I left, his nurse asked if I wanted to see before and after photos of eyelid surgeries that he had performed. I viewed dozens and was impressed. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Casso. He’s warm, thorough, and a most talented surgeon.

Word of mouth and reputation. I choose Dr. Casso for the following reasons. My husband in a Plastic Surgeon and knew Dr Casso had a reputation of being a careful and conservative surgeon. Inaddition I had other friends who had used Dr Casso for a facelift and I was able to view their results and they were all pleased with the outcome. I think I got an excellent result, I look years younger with a soft natural look. I always found Dr. Casso and his staff to be kind, helpful and professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Non-smokers in good general health who believe their necks give them a tired or aged appearance are generally good candidates for this procedure. Modern deep plane procedures as performed by Dr. Casso on the face and neck substantially reduce the risk of wound healing problems among patients with a smoking history.

Both men and women may be good candidates for neck lift surgery. Incision lines are carefully planned with patients to avoid visibility of scars or objectionable hairline distortions.

A significant history of smoking often results in harm to the microcirculation (blood flow mediated by very small blood vessels). As excellent circulation is required for optimal wound healing following this procedure, patients with a history of substantial smoking over many years are advised of their increased risk for wound healing complications, notwithstanding the protective benefits of utilizing deep plane techniques.

Moderate smokers are advised to avoid any contact with nicotine for several weeks prior to surgery.

Pain after this procedure is generally moderate and controlled with oral pain medication. Most patients go home the day of surgery and are advised to avoid bending, stooping, straining, or exertion. Small drain tubes are typically removed the next day in the office, after which patients may shower and shampoo daily.

Sutures are removed within ten days, and for some patients, a compression garment is recommended. Bruising and swelling usually resolve within two to three weeks.

Most patients may return to light activities within one to two weeks, while vigorous exercise should be deferred for four to six weeks.

The results of a neck lift are long-lasting, typically between 10 to 15 years, depending on factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and skincare. While the natural aging process will continue, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and using proper skin care products can help extend the longevity of the results.

Some patients opt for touch-up procedures in the future to maintain their youthful appearance.

Incisions for a neck lift are carefully placed in front of and behind the ears, along the neck hairline, and sometimes under the chin in such a way as to minimize visibility. While some scarring is inevitable, these scars typically fade over time and become barely noticeable. Following post-operative care instructions, including using scar-minimizing treatments, can further improve healing and reduce visibility.

The cost of a neck lift in Dr. Casso’s practice, including surgery fees, general anesthesia fees, and operating room charges, vary between $10,000 and $13,000 (this includes general anesthesia).

Please note that prices are subject to change without notice. A more precise quote will be provided at the time of your consultation. Substantial cost savings apply when procedures are combined in one operation.
