Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Casso MD is one of Houston’s most established and leading facelift specialists. His thorough, yet measured approach to facial surgery, cultivated over 35 years of experience, creates results that are natural and beautiful.
A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to reduce common signs of aging in the face and neck, including cheek laxity, jowls, skin and muscle laxity in the neck, and prominence of folds around the mouth. These are typically caused by factors such as gravity, sun exposure, stress, significant weight loss, and lifestyle choices.
A surgical facelift addresses these concerns by tightening facial muscles, removing excess skin, and repositioning underlying tissues to restore a youthful, refreshed appearance.
Depending on your goals, a facelift can be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as a neck lift, eyelid surgery, or brow lift to enhance overall results.
The procedure has evolved significantly over the years, and modern techniques prioritize natural facelift results while minimizing downtime and scarring.
Aging affects the face in several ways, leading to the development of wrinkles, sagging skin, and loss of definition in facial features. Key factors contributing to facial aging include:
Facial rejuvenation surgery addresses these signs of aging by tightening the underlying facial muscles, repositioning fat deposits, and removing excess skin. The result is a smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking appearance.
There are several types of facelifts, each designed to target different areas of the face and levels of aging:
A full facelift, also known as traditional rhytidectomy surgery, provides comprehensive facial rejuvenation by addressing multiple areas of the face and neck. It is ideal for individuals with significant sagging, deep wrinkles, and volume loss.
The procedure involves carefully tailored incisions made around the hairline and behind the ears, rejuvenating facial and neck tissues, and restoring youthful contours.
A mid-facelift targets the middle portion of the face, specifically the cheeks and under-eye area, as well as the nasolabial folds, marionette folds, and jowls.
It is ideal for patients without significant aging in the neck, moderate sagging and volume loss and who do not require a full facelift.
The facelift procedure involves several steps to achieve optimal results. One of the most advanced and effective techniques used today is the deep plane facelift, which lifts and repositions deeper layers of the face for long-lasting and natural results.
Owing to complete release of constricting ligamentous structures, and reliance on deeper, more substantial structures for suspension (SMAS and Platysma muscle), this technique provides longer-lasting and more natural results compared to traditional facelift methods.
A facelift offers numerous benefits, helping patients achieve a rejuvenated and youthful look.
The best facelift procedure for you depends on several factors, including age, skin condition, and aesthetic goals. During your facelift consultation, Dr. Casso will help you determine whether you need a full facelift, mid-facelift, or a combination of procedures for comprehensive results.

My experience with Dr. Casso has been an A+. His staff was professional and friendly during all of my appointments. During my initial appointment with Dr. Casso, he explained what he planned to do if I decided to get the surgery and answered my myriad questions. I appreciated the fact that he was not urging me to get the surgery, but instead, left the decision to me. Before I left, his nurse asked if I wanted to see before and after photos of eyelid surgeries that he had performed. I viewed dozens and was impressed. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Casso. He’s warm, thorough, and a most talented surgeon.

Word of mouth and reputation. I choose Dr. Casso for the following reasons. My husband in a Plastic Surgeon and knew Dr Casso had a reputation of being a careful and conservative surgeon. Inaddition I had other friends who had used Dr Casso for a facelift and I was able to view their results and they were all pleased with the outcome. I think I got an excellent result, I look years younger with a soft natural look. I always found Dr. Casso and his staff to be kind, helpful and professional.

To achieve the best results, a facelift can be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures, including:
Upper and/or lower eyelid surgery corrects drooping eyelids and under-eye bags for a brighter appearance.
An endoscopic brow lift repositions the brows for a more youthful appearance while smoothing forehead wrinkles.
Tightens loose skin and removes excess fat in the neck for a defined jawline. Delete this, as the neck lift is part of the facelift.
Who is a good candidate for a facelift?
Ideal candidates are non-smokers in good general health who want to look more refreshed and youthful, although deep plane techniques substantially reduce the risk of wound healing problems and scarring as a result of the use of thicker, more substantial, and thus better vascularized and robust flaps.
If previous surgery left poor quality or poorly positioned scars, caused facial distortions, or incompletely addressed underlying aging signs, oftentimes these may be improved with further surgery. Even optimal previous facelift surgery will be followed by further inevitable aging over time, which may be addressed with revisionary surgery.
The skin and subcutaneous tissues of the face, along with a deeper layer of tissue (SMAS) are surgically released from their attachments to underlying tissues in the cheeks. These tissues are then repositioned and firmly secured in a predominantly vertical orientation. Likewise, skin and underlying platysma muscles in the neck are freed, repositioned and firmly secured.
What is the recovery process like after facelift surgery?
Some facial rejuvenation procedures offer a quick recovery, limited invasiveness, local anesthesia, and early return to normal activities.
The reality is that significant, lasting improvement requires certain surgical maneuvers, which, of necessity, result in some degree of bruising and swelling.
Given the substantial and lasting improvement, patients are very accepting of this recovery period. In fact, most patients feel comfortable returning to social activities within 2 to 3 weeks after a deep plane facelift.
Postoperative pain is generally moderate, and well controlled with oral pain medication.
The patient is typically seen in the office the day after surgery and small drains in the neck are removed.
What kind of facelift results can I expect?
Facelift results vary depending on the technique used and individual healing processes. Most patients can expect a smoother, firmer, and more youthful appearance, with improved jawline definition and reduced wrinkles. The deep plane facelift provides natural-looking results that can last 10-15 years. While aging continues, a facelift significantly turns back the clock, helping patients maintain a rejuvenated look for years to come.
What does the facelift surgery process involve?
The process begins with a facelift consultation, where Dr. Casso will assess your needs and recommend the right procedure for you.
During your deep plane facelift Dr. Casso makes incisions beginning along or behind the hairline above the ear which are then extended carefully along the ear contours and then extend around the earlobe and end along or behind the hairline behind the ear.
The skin and subcutaneous tissues of the face, along with a deeper layer of tissue (SMAS) are surgically released from their attachments to underlying tissues in the cheeks. These tissues are then repositioned and firmly secured in a predominantly vertical orientation. Likewise, skin and underlying platysma muscles in the neck are freed, repositioned and firmly secured..
Excess fat, when present, is removed in the neck. Tightening of neck muscles may require a small incision under the chin. Finally, the facial skin is redraped, and excess skin is removed. The wounds are then carefully sutured, and scarring is often imperceptible.
Dr. Casso has further refined existing deep-plane procedures to more comprehensively address facial aging, and to provide a more natural aging process over the years following surgery. While the improvement in appearance is often dramatic, Dr. Casso strives, above all, to insure a natural, un-operated appearance, with nearly undetectable scarring.
Will my facelift be performed at a hospital or other surgical facility?
While this procedure is sometimes performed under local anesthesia in outpatient facilities, Dr. Casso recommends general anesthesia.
What is the cost of facelift surgery?
The cost of a facelift in Dr. Casso’s practice, including surgery fees, general anesthesia fees, and operating room charges, vary between $14,500 and $17,000 (this includes general anesthesia).
Please note that prices are subject to change without notice. A more precise quote will be provided at the time of your consultation. Substantial cost savings apply when procedures are combined in one operation.
