Skin Care

Before beginning the BioMedic skin-care program, each patient undergoes a skin evaluation based on the BioMedic® Skin Classification System. The skin type is determined with classifications including environmentally damaged, hyperpigmented, hypersensitive, acne-prone, active acne, and sun exposed. Based on results, a special BioMedic® Home Treatment Program is created for each person.
The products are excellent for use by men or women and can be used alone or in conjunction with a BioMedic® skin treatment known as the MicroPeel®.
The following procedures are performed by Dr. Casso.
Laser Resurfacing
Problem.
Fine or course wrinkles on the face or uneven skin surface texture due to scarring.
Who is a candidate?
- Patients who desire a smoother, youthful appearing skin.
- Individuals who desire skin with a more uniform color.
- Patients who seek a tighter feel to the skin on their face.
Procedure description.
During laser skin rejuvenation, which is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia, Dr. Casso will remove the superficial layer of the skin with a pulsed laser. Extremely controlled and predictable, this technique provides for optimal skin healing.
Recuperation and healing.
The wound is lubricated liberally with a moisturizing ointment. Post-operative treatment, including cleansing, maintenance of lubrication, and sun avoidance, will facilitate healing, which will occur in seven to 10 days. Redness will last from one to six months, and makeup can be worn when healing is complete in about seven to 10 days.
Chemical Peel
Problem.
Superficial wrinkles of the face; uneven pigmentation; enlarged facial pores; superficial acne scars of the face; age spots.
Who is a candidate?
- Individuals who desire a smoother, youthful appearance and more uniform skin color.
- Individuals who wish to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
- Individuals with uneven pigmentation, superficial acne scars or age spots.
Procedure description.
After preparation of the skin, Dr. Casso will apply one of several chemical solutions. Depending on the skin's condition and the desired effect, a light, moderate, or deep peel will be performed. Skin peel procedures are sometimes done without any anesthesia.
Recuperation and healing.
Specific written instructions are given after the skin peel is completed. The treated areas are washed, and medicated lotions are applied several times daily. For light peels, the treated skin turns red or pink and heals without crusting. With a medium or deep peel, a superficial crust or membrane will form. This will peel off in three to seven days, similar to a sunburn blister. A new skin surface that is smoother will be revealed. Resulting skin redness after deeper peels fades in a month or more.
Dermabrasion
Problem.
Fine or deep wrinkles of the skin, usually on the face; uneven skin surface caused by scarring or acne.
Who is a candidate?
- Individuals who wish to minimize or make less visible skin irregularities, scars, or wrinkles.
- Individuals who wish to minimize uneven skin surfaces due to acne.
Procedure description.
During dermabrasion, Dr. Casso will smooth the superficial layers of the skin to achieve a more even surface. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.
Recuperation and healing.
Post-operative pain is controlled with oral medication. The treated area is covered with a moisturizing ointment following the dermabrasion. Healing occurs within five to seven days, when makeup may be applied. Redness of the skin fades gradually over a two to three month period.
Botox
Problem.
Facial wrinkles in the forehead, between the eyes, and in the crow's feet area in the upper third of the face.
Who is a candidate?
- Individuals who want to reduce facial wrinkles in the forehead, between the eyes, or in the crow's feet areas.
- Individuals who desire a more rested, more relaxed appearance.
- Individuals with inherited furrows on the forehead or between the eyes, resulting in an angry appearance.
Procedure description.
Dr. Casso injects very small amounts of Botox® into the small muscles between the brows, in the forehead, and at the corners of the eyes. This causes those muscles to halt their function (become paralyzed), thereby improving the appearance of the wrinkle. Depending on the areas being treated, five to 15 needle pricks or more may be required. Discomfort is moderate and lasts only a few seconds.
Botox, which is freshly prepared, causes temporary paralysis of the muscles and re-injection is necessary in about three months.
Recuperation and healing.
Occasionally, the tiny needle may puncture a small blood vessel during the injection and a small bruised area may develop. Such an area can last five to 10 days and can be covered with makeup.
Complications are rare but may include paralysis of a nearby muscle resulting in loss of its function.
Skin Lesion Removal
Problem.
Possible skin cancer, unsightly or uncomfortable moles or cysts.
Who is a candidate?
- Individuals who wish to remove unsightly or possible cancerous skin lesions with optimal cosmetic results.
Procedure description.
Skin lesion removal is often covered by health insurance, particularly when skin cancer is suspected. Skin tumors or cysts are usually removed under local anesthesia in the office. During the procedure, Dr. Casso excises each lesion and sutures the area using plastic surgery techniques. Some wounds will require more extensive reconstruction (local flap or skin graft). If skin cancer is suspected, tissue will be sent to a pathologist for interpretation. A frozen section (quick pathalogic assessment) may be performed to allow for complete surgical removal in one session.
Recuperation and healing.
Pain is usually very minimal and controlled with Tylenol. Sutures are usually removed in four to six days on the face and seven to 10 days on other parts of the body. When no sutures are required, healing occurs in seven to 14 days.

Scar Revision
Problem.
Wide, thick, depressed, or unsightly scar.
Who is a candidate?
- Individuals who wish the appearance of scars to be less noticeable as the scar is made flatter, thinner, or smoother
Procedure description.
During scar revision, Dr. Casso will remove the old scar, and he will utilize one of several plastic surgery techniques to repair the incision. Most scar revisions are performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, or in the office. However, if the scar is large or if the patient prefers, the procedure may be done under sedation and local or general anesthesia.
Recuperation and healing.
Post-operative pain is usually minimal, and any sutures that are required are removed in four to six days for the face and seven to 10 days for other parts of the body. The new scar will initially be red, but fading will occur in six to 24 months, depending on the scar's location.
